THE EXACT RANGE OF INVESTIGATIVE interests covered by the FBI's Security Matter Dash X files is unknown. Publicly, the FBI has posted on its website only, "Yes, we do have files on some unusual phenomena -- like cattle mutilation, UFOs, and Roswell but... it’s not part of our job description, and we don’t have a secret collection of 'X-Files' squirreled away..."
Well, not any more at least, thanks to the FOIA. Except for the ones they're maybe hiding. Or not. No one really knows.
What is known is that in July 1947 the FBI agreed to help the Pentagon gather information on the then-new mystery of reported intruders in American skies. The directive to all field offices read, "You should investigate each instance which is brought to your attention of a sighting of a flying disc... The Bureau should be notified immediately by teletype of all reported sightings and the results of your inquiries."
The cooperation between the Air Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation didn't last long -- FBI Director Hoover took umbrage at an Air Force memo a few months after, and ended formal FBI participation.
But there remains a trove of files from those few months in 1947. Some of the files are amusing. Others, seriously baffling. Taken together they contribute to a more detailed image of that seminal year...
NOTE: The images below have been reduced to fit in this format. A full-sized version of the documents below is available here.
AFTER J. EDGAR HOOVER'S fit of pique at the Air Force memo the FBI did end any joint effort at investigation. But by that time the Air Force had already assembled the members for its first official investigation, under the name Project Sign and was no longer interested in the help of the FBI.
Hoover would continue over the coming years to launch investigations about the phenomenon, but they were primarily to find out what the Air Force knew, and wasn't sharing.
Notes:
1. FBI files on the UFO phenomenon can be found in the form of 16 PDF files in the FOIA section of the FBI "Vault" in the Unexplained Phenomenon section, under "UFO".
