06:22:13 -- PICTURES OF THE WEEK: The Boeing B-47 Stratojet -- the world's first swept-wing bomber. The B-47 entered service with Strategic Air Command (SAC) in 1951, and remained in active service until the mid-1960s. The six-engined, jet-powered B-47 was designed to fly at speeds in excess of 600 miles per hour and at high altitudes to avoid enemy interception. Its primary mission was to drop nuclear bombs on the Soviet Union in case of war, but variations of the B-47 also conducted high-altitude reconnaissance overflights within Soviet territorial borders as well. Its design of engines carried in pods under the swept wing was a major innovation -- later incorporated by Boeing into its line of modern jet airliners.

The B-47 entered service at a time when Strategic Air Command (SAC) was undergoing significant expansion to meet the perceived Soviet threat. In the space of six years its force of B-47s expanded more than a hundred-fold: from 12 in 1951 to 1,285 in 1957. So urgent was the call for production that Boeing was joined by rivals Lockheed and Douglas in manufacturing the six-engined nuclear bomber. Eventually over 2,000 were produced. Tragically, over 200 B-47s were lost to accidents, killing 464 crew members -- not including original test pilot Scott Osler, who was killed on May 11, 1949 during a test flight when the canopy flew off the craft during a high-speed flight.
